Side by Side
Published in Hardcover by Duffy & Snellgrove (January, 2002)
Author: Sebastian Smee
Average review score:

Stunning Debut from young critic
In his first book, Sebastian Smee breathes new life into a subject which many would think had been smothered by previous writings. Smee writes with clarity and vigour, as he takes the reader through a history of the relationship between these two titans of 20th century art. By focussing on some of their key works, the author elucidates their artistic influence on each other, and supports this with reference to numerous primary and secondary sources.

Mercifully, the author avoids the temptation of cliche, so prevalent in similar works. His writing exudes freshness and new perspectives. This book is approachable for the novice art critic, yet even the most well-read will find something enlightening in it.

Highly recommended. We await Mr Smee's next work with great interest.

The Six Brandenburg Concertos: Bwv 1046-1051 (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Johann Sebastian Bach
Average review score:

The best things come in small packages
This is an excellent miniature edition of Bach's Brandenburg Concerti. It has an interesting and informative preface, including a small list of variants from the MS. Moreover, the price is right, and while the print is extremely small, the engraving is very clear, making the edition easily readable. This is a very good deal.

Excellent Work!
Dover Publications did a fine job in presenting this material. I feel that is an excellent companion to the recording, and would be perfect as part of a set: The Great Choral Works. Shortly after purchasing this book, I also purchased the St. John's Score, Christmas Oratorio score and Mass in b score- I never want to close them!

A Time to Heal
Published in Paperback by PageFree Publishing (April, 2003)
Author: Thomas Sebastian Fiske
Average review score:

An intensely autobiographical mystery
Thomas Fiske is a retired manufacturing executive who had a chance to investigate some family history after breaking both legs while falling up some stairs. While he was recuperating, he had an opportunity to visit the homes of his great grandparents in Kentucky. He unraveled the mystery of an ancestor's death and produced this very readable story for public consumption.

In this intensely autobiographical mystery, single businessman Stokley Towles takes a sabbatical from his career when a broken leg lands him in the hospital and on the disabled list. While he is recuperating, he has a series of dreams involving conversations with his grandmother about a murder of an ancestor named Henry Vallandingham. Vallandingham was murdered in a small town in Missouri in 1856, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. Towles begins his own investigation, and is joined by Ariadne Edwards, who turns out to be a DEA agent investigating smuggling in the area. When they are followed and harassed by some of the locals, the journey into genealogy becomes something else:

"'What do you want?' Stoke said as he tried to get in front of Ari. He thought she might be able to get her gun out of her purse. But the men didn't like what he was doing. 'Stay where we can see you both,' the tall man commanded. Stoke stood still. 'Is this a robbery?' Ari asked the men. 'For the moment,' the man said, and added, 'so gimme your purse.' He handed The gun to his partner."

With his expertise in genealogy, Fiske is able to piece together an amazing story that reflects on a much wider arena than just an old family murder mystery. With the start of the Civil War, Fiske uncovers a conspiracy by pro-slavery advocates to murder anyone advocating for abolition of slavery in western Missouri. With the prize of Kansas as a possible slave state, these men would stop at nothing to preserve their lifestyle. A Time To Heal is a wonderfully crafted historical-mystery that is timeless in its conception. Mr. Fiske has offered an invaluable lesson to not only the children he substitute teaches, but to the world in general. A great read!...

Vampyre Almanac, 2000 Edition
Published in Paperback by The Sanguinarium (31 October, 2000)
Author: Father Sebastian
Average review score:

The one to read
I have recently finished the Vampire Almanac 2000 edition and was quite satisfied. It takes an informative angle on the gothic and Vampyre scene and creates a time saving and complete digest for any need you may have. From event listings, music reviews and bands to watch for, book reviews, a full calendar, the most comprehensive list of links and listings for clothing, literature, organizations, art and e-groups..and my personal favorite, a list of drinks from around clubs and bars and how to make them. I think the most suprising thing about it was that you do not have to be in the scene long to appreciate what you find inside though it will give you a better understanding. Even those outside the goth and Vampyre scenes will enjoy and find it an informative read. It is written in a fashion as to not be over the top and theatrical, just a useful and complete guide to the Vampyre scens
